What is Paleo?

I had to make Paleo a word in Microsoft Word

No joke, I did. Which led me to thinking…what is paleo? Is primal the same, or is it different? Are you my mother? Wait a minute now- those are HUGE questions. Like, state-of-the art, leave-you-scratching-your-head-if-you-haven’t-fallen-asleep-by-the-time-the-answer- concludes. And honestly, each expert, researcher, coach, soccer-mom, and blogger will have a different answer for you. I know what you are thinking; “Well thanks Mal, that was super helpful and cleared everything right up for me”! Sorry, Charlie (did Sheen ruin that expression for anyone else?). Here is the truth: I am no expert (much to my dismay), and these posts are the opinions I have formed while devouring information from far and wide. The information I send your way is what I have personally found to be most effective. I can pretty much assure you they will fall in line with CFR’s main ideals. (Also, I am pretty smart. My 3rd grade teacher told me so.) I know many who have found success with the info I send your way. But keep in mind that my contribution this nutrition blog is INFORMATION. Information is power. Corny though it may be, what I want for each of you is to find yourselves via your relationship with CFR …and to develop a stance on how you eat.

 
WHY do you eat what you do? Be honest: Have you ever answered this question directly? Most of us do not have to answer such a question…but by doing so, are we hindering, rather than helping ourselves? “I eat Pop-Tarts for breakfast because I always have and I got straight A’s in 3rd grade. And most of 4th.” REALLY?

 
Gross – Pop-Tarts…Seriously? They are awful for you! Especially low-calorie, whole-grain Pop-Tarts! If I offered you a funnel cake for breakfast…would you think twice? (You know you would…BE HONEST!). Pop-Tarts=Funnel cake. Would your mom let you eat funnel cake for breakfast?!?! No evidence needed. (lol writing for a blog is awesome).

 
Seriously people. The mission here at CFR is to make you stronger AND to make you smarter.  My aim is to help you along your nutritional journey. It will be confusing, I promise you that much. (As much as I would love to, I do not have all the answers-sorry, I am a butthead.) BUT-I do have directions that you can head in, and the wherewithal and interest to come back to you with answers that are not readily available. I want your journey to a more-badass back squat and increased health to be easy as can be, and full of positives. That said, in order for you to be your best…we are going to have to go back to where I started this post and address what PALEO is and how you are fueling your WOD’s…

 
If you read one (other) thing today, make it this. Take three minutes out of your facebook/twitter/gmailing schedule to read, print out (If you must…do it at work. You know you want to), and maybe even memorize this. It will give you a paleo-ground to start on, or start over with. Also, take a gander at this handy chart from Mark’s Daily Apple-it’s a quick go-to that answers many of the initial paleo/primal questions.

Still feeling confused? That is ok…we are just getting started. Life is like a box of (really dark) chocolate…you never know what you are going to get. (FYI getting a comment section going on the website would be an ideal source of what you all would like to know most about and get into next…)

  1. I’m also a big fan of Kurt Harris. He’s a smart dude and I like how he gives hierarchy to things to eliminate from your life and diet.
